Saint-Malo also known as The City of the Corsairs is Located in Brittany in Northernwestern France on the English Channel.
It is 404 kms away from Paris and 75 kms up north from Rennes, the Regional capital.
The coastline is approximately 10 kilometers.
It was thanks to the discovery of the Americas and the development of trade exchange with the Indies that the economy of Saint-malo expanded rapidly.
Thus, the number of Ship-owners grew significantly.
Some people of that period accounted for the reputation of the city. Among them was Jacques Cartier who discovered and explored Canada, Duguay-Trouin and Robert Surcouf, famous corsairs who would attack the merchant navy and military opponents.
« Semper fidelis » is the official motto of Saint-Malo, symbolizing the mutual loyalty between the inhabitants and their city.
The departure of the Route du Rhum race as well as the finish line of the Transat Québec-Saint-Malo race both take place in Saint-Malo.
In June 2005, Saint-Malo opened a new railway station connected to Paris (3 to 4 trains per day, a 3 hour trip) and Rennes ( around 20 trains per day). The neighbouring city of Pleurtruit has an airport.
